"Twelve mentions" was originally a term for a wedding custom in central China, that is, the man went to the woman's house to "write a letter of engagement" with 12 gifts, usually including wild geese, donkey-hide gelatin and other gifts. It later evolved into a custom in some areas where the woman's family asks for the financial affairs of the groom's family. The novel uses twelve mentions as clues.
