What is crosstalk? As I understand it, "xiang" means images: the myriad things in the world, depicted through sound. It is the sound of images.
For some reason, I got into watching the crosstalk performances of Deyunshe. The more I watched, the more I noticed that while Teacher Guo Degang once commented on every issue under the sun, many of his works now focus solely on teasing Yu Qian and his family. Meanwhile, Deyunshe's apprentices have taken to doing whatever gets a laugh, losing the urge to speak out against society's injustices. It stopped being satisfying to watch, and I began to think about writing crosstalk myself. That's how this book came to be.
A very amazing book, full of joy, anger, sorrow and joy.
