"Bro, there's someone inside my head."
Dao Zhiling, a first-year graduate student, is diagnosed with severe anxiety and moderate depression. But her mother secretly arranges for her to take a leave of absence, her father talks to the air late at night, and her brother once seemed like a completely different person. It all points to a family secret she's never known: for generations, the Dao family has inherited the souls of their ancestors.
The adverse reactions during the awakening period are precisely the symptoms diagnosed as mental illness. Some successfully inherit the wisdom of their ancestors, accumulated over millennia. Many more lose their ability to speak, become paralyzed, or even die in the process of merging.
The one Dao Zhiling is to inherit is Dao Wuya, the most dangerous fangshi of two thousand years ago. He isn't here to give her wisdom. He intends to use her body to be reborn.
Her brother, Dao Zhigao, has lived to this day as a "normal inheritor," only to discover that a "dream eater" that devours memories is imprisoned inside him. Their grandmother is a gatekeeper, their mother an escapist. Every member of the family is protecting her in their own way, and lying to her in their own way.
When anxiety becomes an inheritance and depression becomes a duty, Dao Zhiling must face a choice: silence the voice in her head, or learn to coexist with it?
She is the only "world-maker" in two thousand years, someone capable of rewriting her family's fate.
But the door to the abyss has already opened.
