He was born a male insectoid with a genetic defect, but fate smiled on him: a female insectoid was willing to nurture him and was highly compatible with him. She was willing to save him, but he had already received another female's brood sac transplant, and he would have to wear a punishment device for the rest of his life. A hideous creature like him could never fulfill her feelings, so all he could hope was to live up to her care and kindness. He was willing to protect his mentor forever, too.
Then a massive magnetic-field disturbance struck the interstellar expanse, and all insectoids faced genetic collapse. Only then did the two realize they were each other's best protection. The very defect that had made the male feel inferior became the only clue that could help him find the female in a sea of people.
