The world is divided into the Celestial Realm, the Human Realm, and the Underworld. Ten thousand years ago, there were also the Demon Realm and the Monster Realm. But as the Human Realm rapidly expanded through time and space, the Monster Realm withdrew from the world entirely, while the Demon Realm, as its demonic energy slowly faded away, was lost to the river of time.
The Underworld is dark and eerie. Its sights include the endless River of Forgetfulness, a vast field of blood-red spider lilies, the Bridge of Helplessness where souls come and go, and the Yellow Springs Road, lined with souls waiting to be reborn.
The red spider lily is also called the flower of the other shore. Its flower spirit and leaf spirit are two demons who, together with Meng Po, guard this part of the underworld. They have kept watch for thousands of years, yet have never seen each other. Three enormous Three Lives Stones stand by the banks of the River of Forgetfulness, bearing the records of the past, present, and future lives of every being in the Human Realm.
But upon the river lives a mysterious ferryman wearing a veiled hat. Those who board her boat can be reborn with their memories intact. Only those who have been good people in all three of their lives and never committed evil can return with their memories. It is a form of compensation from the world, granting them another chance at life.
No one knows who this ferryman truly is. Only the King of Hell knows her real identity, though all the underworld officials treat her with great respect.
She is Ling Yue, a spirit pearl formed from the remnants of demonic energy left behind when the Demon Realm vanished ten thousand years ago. It drifted to the Celestial Realm, absorbed the essence of the sun and moon, and became a being who is neither demon, god, nor human. Since all things in the world exist for a reason, the Celestial Realm feared that Ling Yue might one day regain her identity as a Demon God, so they sent her to the Underworld.
Ling Yue’s story is only just beginning... And whose incarnation is that young monk from the Human Realm?
