The story begins when Li Fangxiang, a kindhearted farmer's wife, risks her life in a rainstorm to rescue an elderly man named Deng San from drowning. He falsely accuses her of pushing him in, and his family beats her to death. Even when questioned by the King of Hell after her death, she firmly insists that she saved him, but vows that next time she will keep evidence to prove her innocence.
