Cheng Lin never imagined that the young man she called a “pedantic scholar” would gradually find his way into her heart in the years to come.

She wanted him to love her. She wanted him to admit that he liked her. But no matter what she did, he remained as rigidly proper as ever, observing the rules between sovereign and subject! She could clearly feel that he liked her too. So why couldn't he bring himself to admit it...

“If I can't have your love, then I'll settle for your hate.”

She thought she would always trust the man who had never abandoned her, even in her darkest hour.

But the truth was, he had helped her ascend the throne. As her hunger for power grew, so did her suspicions. She began to doubt his loyalty, to wonder if he was really as incorruptible as he seemed. Sometimes, she even wondered whether he had approached her with an ulterior motive from the very beginning...

In the end, her suspicions finally drove him away.

She began to regret it. She began to fear.

“I never knew this vast palace could feel so cold.”

But would he ever come back? Or was he still out there...?
