Bai Daqi swallowed nervously. What made so many things terrifying was not knowing, but knowing and being powerless to change their slide into the abyss of despair. With his eyes closed, Bai Daqi's face turned deathly pale.
Ren Xiaoyu continued, "I'm giving you time! Even after trying with all my might, I couldn't change anything. I hope you can give me a surprise. Remember, I'll be waiting for you on the other side of time!"
A time symbol appeared between Bai Daqi's brows: a minute hand and an hour hand, both pointing to one o'clock.
Ma Ying'er suddenly cried out in alarm. Bai Daqi opened his eyes. In the woods on either side of the road, countless green heads had appeared. They were the green monsters known as Mangsite.
Ma Ying'er's face paled. She turned to Bai Daqi.
Bai Daqi glanced at Ma Ying'er. Her heart gave a jolt when she saw the coldness in his eyes. It was so chilling that her heart trembled, and she felt a pang of sadness.
A white feather floated out through the crack in the open car window, drifting lightly as though the airflow around the off-road vehicle had caught it and carried it along.
Bai Daqi kept his gaze fixed in the distance, as if he could see through the vast universe all the way to the edge of the world.
A whistle sounded in the blood-red night sky, and the green monsters surged toward them like a tide.
A large hand came to rest on Ma Ying'er's trembling arm. Suddenly, Ma Ying'er no longer felt alone. Bai Daqi was still there.
The white feather quivered. Countless white feathers appeared above the heads of the green monsters, as if they had always been there, as if that was where they belonged.
