Thirty-five-year-old Xiao Ning travels into a book with a System and becomes the legitimate daughter of the Duke of State’s household. But in the original story, she is a “young lady” who is never mentioned even once, and her entire family are cannon fodder, condemned to execution for treason!
The System orders Xiao Ning to stop the Fourth Prince from ascending the throne. But in the original story, this prince loves his country and its people and is exceptionally capable. Is there more to the story?
Her grandfather, the Duke of Dingguo, is a veteran statesman and a pillar of the nation. He guarded the borders for decades, serving both the late emperor and the current sovereign. The court could not have remained stable without him, yet he was suspected and his entire family died horribly!
Her eldest uncle devoted his whole life to the imperial court and risked everything for the common people, only to be falsely accused of treason. Even after his death, the people reviled him!
Her second uncle and aunt fought side by side against the enemy. Just as their reputation as a husband-and-wife team struck fear into their foes, they both died on the battlefield!
Her mother was once the most beautiful woman in the capital, yet for no apparent reason she eloped with a servant. Years later, she was just as inexplicably murdered by bandits!
Her eldest brother is brilliantly talented, yet the emperor suspects him. When he seeks justice for the family, he is accused of treason and even charged with having cheated to earn his place in the imperial examinations. Reviled by the people, he takes his own life outside the Drum Tower of Justice!
Her second brother is a formidable martial artist, but to avoid arousing the emperor’s suspicion, their grandfather decreed that no descendant of the family could join the army. The young man grows bitter and frustrated, then is brutally murdered while resisting arrest when the family is destroyed!
Since the current emperor does nothing and cares only about his own power and status, and the supposedly patriotic and people-loving heir is just a fraud, why not join forces with the whole family, overthrow the old ruler first, and then bring down the young one!
