This is not a wish-fulfillment story. There are no brainless characters, no competing for favor or face-slapping, and no everyone-loves-the-protagonist trope. The main cast is an ensemble.
The first volume mainly sets things up for the second. Both are about wandering the martial world and experiencing life among ordinary people, with very little fantasy. The male lead went through a massive upheaval as a child and is hiding a shocking secret. The female lead’s family is destroyed, and she gradually grows from an official’s daughter into a manly figure. Please read with caution if that doesn’t suit you.
Fantasy elements begin in the second volume. If you’re not interested in ancient martial arts, you can skip straight to the second volume without affecting your reading.
