1. The story moves slowly, very slowly.
2. The worldbuilding is fairly expansive, with lots of plot threads, so many, all gradually resolved.
3. The pursuit of his wife takes a while, since the gong is a coward who only dares talk big.
4. Both gong and shou have suffered a lot. Their pasts will be covered in the flashback arcs.
5. Odd-numbered arcs cover the present, even-numbered arcs cover the past.
