On my thirtieth birthday, Si Zeyan asked me to meet him at the Civil Affairs Bureau.
He specifically told me to wear my wedding dress and bring my documents, saying he had a big birthday surprise for me.
But when I arrived at the entrance, he laughed with the group of friends behind him.
“See? She really came in a wedding dress with her ID. Pay up, you lost the bet. One hundred each!”
Then he turned to me and raised an eyebrow.
“Meng Xin, I was just joking. You didn’t actually believe me, did you?”
When I said nothing, he added with a grin, “If you’re really that desperate to get married, you can just go in and grab some random guy to get a marriage certificate with.”
The people around him all laughed and talked over one another.
They laughed that I was Si Zeyan’s most devoted backup, a lovesick fool who would never marry anyone else, even if I stayed single for the rest of my life.
But when I walked out of the Civil Affairs Bureau with my new husband on my arm and a fresh marriage certificate in hand, Si Zeyan stood frozen before me, his face turning pale.
