Tang Wanwan is the legitimate daughter of a marquis's household, while Xie Lanyan is a poor scholar from a once-prominent family in decline.
By chance, she saves him, and afterward Xie Lanyan comes to ask for her hand in marriage.
Her family does everything they can to stop her, but she is blinded by Xie Lanyan's sincerity. She resolutely marries into the Xie family and even grows distant from her relatives because of it.
On their wedding day, Xie Lanyan breaks both legs in an accident. She remains devoted to him and single-handedly keeps the Xie family afloat.
But once he can walk again, he wants to demote her from wife to concubine, claiming he cannot bear to let the woman he loves suffer.
She sees the truth at once and decides to divorce him. She wants nothing to do with such a heartless scoundrel!
But Xie Lanyan and his mother assume she's just throwing a tantrum. They think she'll come begging for his forgiveness in a couple of days and volunteer to become his concubine.
They never expect her to turn around and marry the great general, the man everyone in the capital wants to curry favor with!
Xie Lanyan finally realizes what he's lost and begs her for forgiveness, utterly devastated.
Xie Lanyan: “Come back. You're still my wife!”
The Great General: “Get lost!”
Not long after Tang Wanwan gets married, she discovers that her husband has a hundred faces. One moment he's a gentle scholar, as soft as a spring breeze; the next, he's a great general whose name inspires fear across the land...
She gets angry. “Pack your things and leave. I can't handle having you as a husband.”
The great general, who has always been above everyone else, kneels on a washboard and begs her: “I know I was wrong. Could you please not kick me out...”
How come the supporting characters are written so intellectually?
