A fruit shop opened near my company, and since the owner is from my hometown, I often shop there.
After work today, I went to buy some fruit and asked to get half a watermelon. The owner said it was too late, and the other half would be hard to sell.
I understood, so without a word, I bought a whole one.
As I was setting it in my car outside, I turned around and saw another customer walk out of the shop carrying half a watermelon.
I couldn't help going over to ask how they'd bought half a watermelon.
The customer looked puzzled. “You just pick one and have them cut it in half. That's how everyone buys them.”
I froze on the spot. So I was the only one who couldn't buy half a watermelon.
If they won't sell me half a watermelon, they can forget about getting our company's group order, too.
