Duanwu is a lowly pearl diver at Hepu’s pearl beds. For ten years, she has toiled day after day in this brutal, lightless place where the strong prey on the weak. Stubborn by nature, she refuses to believe she is doomed to spend her whole life trampled underfoot. To obtain a manumission document and win her freedom, she takes the risk of diving into Broken Hope Pool to harvest giant pearls. Treacherous currents swirl beneath the surface, bloodthirsty sharks prowl, and A Gou, the man who once abused her, watches from nearby. Danger is about to erupt...
Yan Zijin, head of the Yan family’s trading caravan, has spent his life pursuing one thing: revenge. Back then, the Cui and Zheng families joined forces to bring down the Yan family, leaving not a single member of Yan Zijin’s family or caravan alive. Though he survived, over the years he became a vicious wolf who never lets an enemy get away with anything. After years of plotting, he begins by targeting the Cui family’s pearl beds at Hepu.
Duanwu and Yan Zijin had nothing to do with each other, but they meet in an age of turbulent, mysterious change. Both are battered and broken, and come to understand and save one another. The two of them, each carrying their own sorrow, become each other’s reason to carry on. But fate makes their already bitter lives even more unpredictable. Will they be able to stay together until the end?
