At the turn of spring and summer in 1945, Communist intelligence operative Song Zhuowen successfully infiltrated the Harbin Special Services Section in Manchukuo. His exceptional deductive skills and meticulous, thorough approach won him the favor of his superiors, while also drawing the envy and covert hostility of his colleagues. To discover where captured Communist operatives were being secretly held, Song Zhuowen used his familiarity with the section’s procedures to follow the clues and locate the secret prison, rescuing the underground party members.
After several consecutive operations ended in failure, Special Services Section chief Guan Xue suspected there was a mole and began an investigation. Song Zhuowen used the section’s tangled web of relationships to clear himself of suspicion. He continued fighting in the treacherous environment, defusing crises and completing a series of difficult missions, including obtaining a map of the enemy army’s patrol routes. But after obtaining intelligence about a secret weapon the Japanese military was developing, he was exposed. He was shot and fell while retreating, but the organization successfully rescued him and helped him escape Harbin.
