Azure Skies, Along Life’s Road, Waiting for Apricot Blossoms in the Misty Rain

Synopsis

This is a story about rural women's hopes and aspirations for love and the realities of marriage. It portrays two rural women and their sense of family responsibility and sacrifice, bride prices in real-life marriages, and the practice of exchanging brides in the 1960s. It vividly contrasts the status of women today with that of women in the past.

The story follows the hardships of rural migrant workers and the life of a woman living with a man in another city. It centers on Sister Ma, an ordinary rural woman, her husband, and Cuihua, the woman living with her husband. Rooted in the countryside's traditional preference for sons over daughters, Cuihua is forced into an exchange marriage. She tries to escape in her own way and seek a new life, only to be tricked. Her disabled husband is miserable, and she is widowed in middle age. She goes elsewhere to find work and hopes to turn her life around through her own efforts, but she cannot escape her fate. In the end, she can only live with Wei Xiaowei, a quiet and introverted man. Eventually, under the pressure of real life, she cannot escape the path fate has laid out for her, and Wei Xiaowei, too, timidly leaves her. What becomes of the unfortunate Cuihua remains to be continued.

This story is entirely fictional. Any resemblance to real people or events is purely coincidental.
