Before they died, the two Impermanence, Black and White, were ordinary people with names of their own. White Impermanence was called Xie Bi'an in life, while Black Impermanence was called Fan Wujiu. Judging by their names, they were born to be ghost officers.
They had sworn brotherhood while still alive and served together in an ancient government department as public officials: constables.
