Set during the warlord conflicts of the Republican era, the story follows Lin Yueyao, the daughter of a wealthy southern merchant. Though she has little love for books, she is exceptionally clever, beautiful, and tenacious. She once lived a comfortable life, with a thriving family business and loving parents. Her father, Lin Zhenghao, is shrewd and capable, while her mother, Su Wanqing, is gentle and dignified.
Lin Yueyao secretly loves Su Yichen, a refined and handsome young man with lofty ideals and admirable character. But Su Yichen is devoted to Shen Jingwan, a gentle, kind, and considerate woman from a family of scholars, whose bearing is as elegant as an orchid. His parents, Qin Zhengguo and Meng Yaqin, come from distinguished backgrounds: his father once served in the military before turning to business, while his mother was born into a prominent family. Drawn to Lin Yueyao's beauty and resilience, Qin Hao repeatedly comes to her aid, but she is so fixated on Su Yichen that she overlooks his feelings.
As time goes on, Lin Yueyao grows through the trials of war. She takes an active part in relief efforts, and her relationship with Qin Hao quietly begins to change. Su Yichen endures hardship after hardship, sees his ideals suffer setbacks, and finds his relationship with Shen Jingwan tested.
