The people of the grasslands honor marriages blessed by the Moon Goddess, and prize unions between those of pure tribal blood. On the day of the childhood betrothal contest, Chengji, who is half grasslander, takes Tana’s, or Pearl’s, purse and makes a vow beneath the Moon Goddess.
But it seems the Moon Goddess does not bless their union. Things do not go as they hoped. When Chengji leaves the grasslands, all he leaves Tana with are the words, “Beyond the grasslands lies the sea. I’ll wait for you there.”
From then on, they search for each other again and again, only to keep missing one another. But when Tana finally sees the sea, Chengji is overcome with regret as he faces the person he has missed countless times, the love of his life.
Chengji takes Tana back to the grasslands and to the Moon Tribe, blessed by the Moon Goddess. He wants to renew his vow for this life, but Moon Lake takes away the Pearl of the Grasslands, once blessed by the Moon Goddess.
