When Wang Pu opened her eyes, she had transmigrated to an alternate dynasty. Her parents were both farmers. It was a year of famine, and they had barely enough clothes to cover themselves or food to fill their stomachs. For her, the fact that they hadn't resorted to selling their children for food was already a blessing.
Immortals descended from the Ninth Heaven, summoning gifted children to join their sects. Wang Pu went, but she wasn't chosen. She saw children in the crowd exchanging secret signals. They were all transmigrators. Wang Pu kept an eye on them. They were all gifted, except for her.
Wang Pu's father took his daughter home. He had heard the immortals could summon wind and rain, and he wanted his daughter to join their sect and learn the rain-summoning art so they wouldn't have to fear drought. But Wang Pu had no talent for it, and he didn't insist.
As the immortals were leaving, someone begged them for rain. The person at the helm of the flying boat frowned and kicked aside the mortal kneeling there. Some of the chosen children began to resist weakly, but one immortal casually said, “If you help these mortals, you'll have to stay here with them.”
Wang Pu watched the flying boat leave, bewildered. Her father held her and shook his head. He knew immortals were like that. He'd come here ten years ago too, during a drought.
It was funny, really. The immortals only ever came during droughts, taking gifted children and giving their families money. Wang Pu asked, “Will they come back?”
“No. The immortals don't like this place.”
“Then why send them to the immortal sect?”
“Flying through the clouds and summoning wind and rain is very appealing.” Wang Pu answered her own question. She had never seen or heard of any immortal coming back. None of the children who left ever returned.
Wang Pu looked at her father holding her and understood. Plenty of farming families shared her father's hope: to learn the art of summoning wind and rain.
