The Legend of the Wood Spirits: The Wooden Puppet Chronicles

Yu Jiuyuan formed hand seals, drawing on the scant spiritual energy left in her body. Before her stood a small ironwire grass. As she continued pouring spiritual energy into it, the plant pulled its roots from the soil and scurried out of the dilapidated courtyard to gather news at her command. This was one of the techniques she had mastered as a wood spirit: the Wooden Puppet Art.

Outside the courtyard stood a lavishly dressed woman: Han Jiaojiao, the second wife of Yu Jiuyuan’s father. Her face was full of spite. Whenever she thought of the girl living in the courtyard, she remembered that her husband had been intimate with another woman before they met, and even had a child with her. The thought filled her with rage. She never noticed the tiny ironwire grass by her feet.

Along with the maids and matrons behind her, she had plotted and carried out countless underhanded schemes. By now, the girl’s reputation in the capital was utterly ruined. In a little while, they would be able to take her life. What Han Jiaojiao did not know was that in the mortal world where she lived, the girl she had locked in that rundown courtyard was someone she could never afford to provoke.
