Historical Background:

Throughout ancient Chinese history, the imperial harem was a hotbed of political power struggles. Emperors of the feudal dynasties had numerous consorts, and the women of the harem fought fiercely for the emperor's favor, their own status, and their families' glory. The harem system gradually took shape starting in the pre-Qin period, with strict distinctions between consorts of different ranks. As history progressed, the tactics used in harem rivalries grew increasingly complex, ranging from verbal attacks and calculated frame-ups to currying favor and building alliances. Such power struggles appeared throughout many historical periods, including the rivalry between Empress Lu and Lady Qi during the Han dynasty and the rise of Wu Zetian during the Tang dynasty. These events offer a wealth of material and inspiration for the novel, reflecting the plight and ambitions of women living under the feudal system. They also give us a glimpse into the complexity and cruelty of life in the ancient imperial court.
