Ten Years in Captivity

In 1986, when zombie movies were selling like crazy, roller skates still had four little wheels, and people couldn't yet tell reality from fantasy, my grandfather became a teacher in a remote town in Gansu. He had read a few classics and had the air of a scholar, so he was the envy of everyone. But in the end, he quit over a five-yuan salary. Someone came to take his place around that time, and that was when our family's decline began. Before I was even born, my grandmother was beaten to death at home by outsiders. That same year, my eldest aunt was abducted and sold by a group from Hebei. My mother told me some of these things, and I experienced others myself. Now I have been abducted for seven years, and I must rely on these memories to find my way home.
