In the early years of the Han Dynasty, the northern Xiongnu frequently invaded the borderlands. To protect the nation, Emperor Wu of Han sent the Gentleman Attendant Su Wu on a diplomatic mission to the Xiongnu, hoping to ease tensions through diplomacy. Loyal and upright, Su Wu ventured deep into Xiongnu territory with his deputy Chang Hui and others. But beneath the surface, power struggles were brewing within the Xiongnu. The rebel general Yu Chang plotted to assassinate the traitor Wei Lü, but the scheme was exposed, setting off a bloody interrogation and a game of power.
Meanwhile, turmoil was brewing in the Han court as well. The powerful minister Huo Guang and the Shangguan father and son fought for influence, repeatedly using Su Wu's mission to pressure Emperor Zhao in an attempt to bring Huo Guang down. Although Emperor Wu had passed away, the political struggles he left behind continued. The court officials fought openly and in secret for their own interests, and the situation grew ever more complicated.
In Xiongnu territory, Su Wu steadfastly refused to surrender despite Wei Lü's threats and inducements. He would rather die than submit, displaying remarkable wisdom and integrity. His loyalty deeply impressed the Xiongnu Chanyu. Though Su Wu was exiled to the North Sea, where he endured hunger, cold, and loneliness, he patiently waited for a chance to return home.
In the end, Emperor Zhao of Han ascended the throne, and the Han Dynasty and the Xiongnu made peace. Su Wu's fate drew the attention of the Han court. Han envoys visited the Xiongnu and learned that Su Wu was still alive, and at last he was able to return to Han. He became a symbol of loyalty and wisdom, while his story also revealed the intricacies of political maneuvering, the power struggles inside and outside the court, and the sweeping tides of history.
Although I haven't read it for a long time, I like this book. Don't be greedy for power and don't be blinded by interests. No matter how the future changes, you must be a person who is useful to the people and the country.
This book is very interesting. I learned about Su Wu's noble character of being loyal to the country and devoted to his duties. Despite enduring all kinds of hardships for decades, his loyalty to the Han Dynasty never changed. Today's cadres should follow Su Wu's example and be loyal to the motherland, the party, and the people.
