Bureau 749 is a highly classified agency. It may have first entered the public eye because of the film The Nine-Tailed Fox. The film’s director, Lu Chuan, confirmed that Bureau 749 was based on a real organization. Its primary function is to study supernatural phenomena, and its security classification is so high that detailed information about it is rarely found online.
According to reliable sources, Bureau 749 was originally located in Mentougou, Beijing, close to Hebei. It had five subordinate work groups: Northeast, North China, Northwest, Southeast, and Southwest. The agency was responsible for collecting information on all kinds of anomalous phenomena. Cases such as the disappearance of Peng Jiamu in the 1980s and the unexplained deaths in the Greater Khingan Range drew its close attention. When Lu Chuan had just graduated from military academy, he also worked at the agency for two years. He personally witnessed video recordings of supernatural phenomena and was deeply shaken.
Insiders have revealed that Bureau 749 was the predecessor of the 507 Research Institute, founded by Qian Xuesen. Its staff were all researchers who specialized in collecting, analyzing, and studying supernatural phenomena. However, because of the agency’s secrecy, little is known outside about its specific work or findings, adding to its air of mystery.
