Etiquette Every Chinese Person Should Know

Etiquette has a long and rich history in Chinese culture and is a spiritual treasure of the Chinese nation. The theme of "Etiquette Every Chinese Person Should Know" highlights just how important etiquette is to every son and daughter of China.

This book explores how etiquette is expressed in every aspect of life. From everyday greetings to the way we sit, stand, and walk, it shows how personal refinement is revealed in the smallest details. For example, the traditional cupped-hands salute embodies humility and respect, while proper posture conveys a dignified bearing. Both express the respect people show one another at the start of an interaction.

In social settings, etiquette plays a vital role in human relationships, whether in the complex yet orderly seating arrangements, table manners, and toasting rules at a formal banquet, or the strict formats and wording required in correspondence. It is a bridge that builds good relationships, prevents unnecessary misunderstandings and conflicts, and promotes social harmony.

Within the family, the etiquette of filial piety and respect for one's elders is central. Filial devotion to one's parents is expressed in every act, from checking on them in the morning and evening to caring for them at their sickbed, from following their guidance to respecting their wishes. Each one reflects the Chinese people's deep regard for family bonds. The affection and harmony between siblings, and the mutual respect between husband and wife, are family traditions that preserve stability and warmth in the home.

Knowing etiquette is not only a way to carry on traditional culture. It is also essential to showcasing the spirit of the Chinese nation in modern society, improving personal character, and advancing social civilization. This book aims to guide every Chinese person in reclaiming etiquette, this precious cultural heritage, and putting its principles into practice, so that the Chinese nation may be a nation of "propriety"
