This novel had an enormous influence on modern books, films, and television dramas based on Wang Wu the Great Saber and Huo Yuanjia. Tracing their origins, most of these works were derived from, adapted from, or at least influenced by The Tale of the Gallant Heroes. The story takes place roughly between ten years before and ten years after the execution of the Six Gentlemen of the Hundred Days’ Reform in the late Qing dynasty, with the lives of some characters extending into the early Republic of China. Using Wang Wu the Great Saber as its starting point, the novel tells the story of the great hero Huo Yuanjia, introduces various heroes of the late Qing, and recounts the legendary tale of Huo Yuanjia defeating three foreign strongmen with his Divine Fist. It concludes with Huo Yuanjia’s poisoning, bringing the story to an end. Also known as The Tale of Modern Gallant Heroes, this is a new-school wuxia novel.
