After failing to be reincarnated 32 times, Meng Po is finally randomly sent by King Zhuanlun to become Xie Wan Ning, the dim-witted legitimate daughter of General Xie's household in the Great Yu Dynasty.
When her stepmother arranges a marriage for her, Xie Wan Ning waves a hand. "Sure. You can marry the person you promised me to."
When her stepmother cuts back on her food allowance, she uses an imperial edict to throw her weight around and demands 1,000 taels in compensation.
Stepmother: "What? 1,000 taels to keep quiet?"
Xie Wan Ning's eyes light up. "A hush payment? That's a different price. I'll do you a favor and make it an even 3,000 taels."
Stepmother: I don't need that favor.
They say the Underworld Bureau has taken on a female constable who got in through connections, and that the moment she arrived she won the favor of Chu Xian Zhi, the Great Yu's top detective.
Yuan Fei Sheng, the rival of the Bureau of Secret Investigations, hears about it and declares that it can't be true. He vows to get to the bottom of things.
But then a demon kidnaps him in a mountain village, where he discovers that his rival's identity is anything but ordinary.
Yuan Fei Sheng: "Who are you people? How can you communicate with spirits?"
Chu Xian Zhi clasps his hands behind his back and raises his chin. "The Great Yu royal family. I'm the Seventh Prince."
Xie Wan Ning grins wickedly, hands on her hips. "The underworld. I'm Meng Po, servant to the Ten Kings of Hell."
The two turn to Yuan Fei Sheng and ask, "What about you?" Yuan Fei Sheng smiles politely. "A clown."
