Journey to the West: Side Stories

In Journey to the West, Sun Wukong is a vital character. With his intelligence and magical powers, he helps Tang Sanzang and the others overcome countless challenges. But in this bonus story, we’ll meet a different Sun Wukong, one who embarks on an unexpected journey of love.

The story takes place while Sun Wukong and Tang Sanzang are traveling to retrieve the scriptures. One day, they arrive at a mysterious celestial realm called the Jade Pool. There, Sun Wukong unexpectedly meets a beautiful fairy, the Jade Pool Fairy. She is a handmaiden of the Queen Mother of the West, clever and kind as well as strikingly beautiful. Sun Wukong is captivated by her beauty and grace at first sight, and falls in love. The Jade Pool Fairy, in turn, is drawn to his courage and wisdom.

During their time at the Jade Pool, Sun Wukong and the fairy keep each other company and share many happy days. They explore the Pool’s beautiful scenery, sample delicacies from the celestial realm, and learn all kinds of wondrous magic together. Their feelings grow deeper and deeper, until at last they fall in love.

But their happy days do not last long. The Queen Mother of the West does not approve of their love. She believes Sun Wukong is a demon monkey from the mortal realm, unworthy of the Jade Pool Fairy. So she decides to send the fairy to a distant immortal mountain, separating her from Sun Wukong forever.

When Sun Wukong hears the news, he is heartbroken. He decides to abandon the journey to retrieve the scriptures and go in search of the Jade Pool Fairy. Tang Sanzang and the other disciples try to persuade him not to abandon his mission,
