Qin Yun, an ordinary woman born in the early 1980s, marries into a family that seems unremarkable but is often cruel with its words.
It is only after having a child that she realizes her mother-in-law is no ordinary woman.
Her mother-in-law is sharp and capable, yet constantly critical and harsh. Any task done imperfectly earns Qin Yun endless scolding.
She tries her best to be a good daughter-in-law and care for the family, but she can never meet her mother-in-law’s standards. Her mother-in-law’s resentment hangs over Qin Yun like an invisible mountain. Whenever the two of them quarrel, the spiteful neighbor Gu Xiuyun is always there to fan the flames and make things worse.
Whenever Qin Yun tries to fight back or defend herself, her mother-in-law and Gu Xiuyun cut her down with even sharper words.
As the days pass, Qin Yun gradually falls into despair. She starts to wonder whether she can ever fit into this family or live in peace with her impossible mother-in-law.
Whenever she sees her child’s innocent smile, she tells herself she cannot give up. She cannot let her child grow up in a home filled with arguments.
Yet every quarrel leaves another deep scar on her heart.
As time goes by, those scars gather into an impassable chasm.
And so Qin Yun begins to fight back. She no longer silently puts up with things as she used to
This book is super nice
The first two self-narratives are a bit too much, but the later ones are good to read. This mother-in-law's curse words make me want to hit someone.
