Reaper Trainee

In a plea-for-help video, a woman wearing shackles begs for freedom. After Zhou Yuan is fired from a bar, a music producer recognizes his talent and invites him to Beijing. Zhou Yuan's father died when he was ten, and his mother suffers from mental illness. His younger sister, Zhou Yi, is a delinquent who is bullied by her classmates over their mother's condition. She tears up Zhou Yuan's plane ticket to Beijing, then jumps to her death after he hits her. After dying, Zhou Yuan becomes a trainee Grim Reaper and meets the gravely injured Gu Chengyu at Apartment 18. He visits Zhou Yi in a dream, only to discover that she has died too and is about to be reborn as a pig. To save her, Zhou Yuan consults ancient texts and learns that crossing the River of the Dead can grant rebirth. He helps Zhou Yi escape from prison, but their way is blocked when the ferryman demands gold coins. Zhou Yuan decides to seduce Gu Chengyu to earn his trust and steal the coins. The two grow close, but various circumstances lead to repeated conflicts and misunderstandings. Luo Han, the head instructor, sets Zhou Yuan up to drug Gu Chengyu while he enters the room to retrieve a heart. Zhou Yi helps Gu Chengyu reclaim his heart with a soul-freezing gun, and Liuxing finally gains freedom by being obliterated. Gu Chengyu appeals to the King of the Underworld, while Zhou Yuan sends Zhou Yi home and chooses to stay with Gu Chengyu. He realizes that true freedom is impossible to find, no matter where he goes.
