I remember the first time I came across a novel about tomb raiding was when I was in middle school.
Back then, my grades were nothing special. With a little push, I could get into the top high school in my small town; without one, I was just mediocre. Every day, the teachers went on about mastering the right study methods, but after all that studying, the only thing I learned was how to sneak a novel during class.
I still remember how, amid the web-novel scene dominated by Wo Chi Fanqie, Tiancan Yangyu, Chenxi, and Wangqi Douluo, I somehow managed to find the novels of Beipai Sanshu.
My imagination was truly lacking back then, so when I first read about Sanshu’s characters repeatedly escaping death and breaking free from one deadly encirclement after another, I was completely captivated.
But now, when I occasionally flip through those novels, all I see is the plain, unadorned prose on the surface. And yet I know all too well the heart-pounding stories hidden beneath it.
Back then, I was always wondering what kinds of strange adventures the protagonists would face next, and what new twists their tumultuous lives would bring.
Times have changed, but I have never stopped feeling grateful that I encountered those stories back then… No, I should say that I came to understand them.
Some of the things I learned from them have saved my life more than once.
And I was even luckier to gradually get the chance to meet some of the many different kinds of people in his stories.
The living and the dead, the unknown and the inevitable, all kinds of chapters…
An author’s brilliant writing can make a story feel more alive, but what ultimately keeps readers hooked is a gripping story full of twists and turns!
