Taizhong was born in November 1952. A true country farmer, he spent his childhood traveling from place to place with his father, earning a living driving horses. As the eldest son, he learned to follow his father’s example and act like a “little adult” from an early age.
Because he was his mother Xiaozhen’s first child, the bond between them was strained from the moment he was born.
His father looked after him day and night. As soon as Taizhong could walk, his father took him along on their journeys, driving horse carts to make ends meet.
It was only after his younger siblings were born that he realized his mother was not a cold-hearted person. She was simply cold toward him. Even when his younger siblings got into trouble, she would curse him and beat him with a stick.
When he was eighteen, he met Xiaohui, the woman who would stay by his side for the rest of his life. They married and had children. Just as he was settling into a stable life, his mother announced that the family would split up. Though he and his father had reclaimed most of the family’s farmland, he ended up with nothing. He had no choice but to start from scratch with his wife, and through his own hard work, he built a life for them.
Later, his father died suddenly. A few years after that, his mother took him to court, accusing him of failing to support her. Just as his children were starting families of their own, he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. In his final moments, he refused to look at his mother again.
