She was China’s first female general and the Shang Dynasty queen with the most complicated and mysterious status. She had her own fief and wealth, and even the Shang king would travel more than eighty kilometers outside the capital to welcome her. She was the earliest female general in history, commanding an army that made up half the nation’s forces. She was also skilled in divination and could communicate with spirits. After her death, she even became the wife of three successive Shang kings. She was Fu Hao, China’s first female god of war.
