After enduring eighty-one trials, Sun Wukong finally retrieves the true scriptures and earns the chance to become a Buddha. Yet after the Buddha’s enlightenment, confusion and uncertainty take root in his heart. When he returns to Flower-Fruit Mountain, he is no longer the carefree Monkey King who once wreaked havoc in Heaven. His heavenly title and place among the Buddhas may symbolize glory, but on Flower-Fruit Mountain, he realizes he can no longer belong to the land that was once his home.
