A Record of Late Qing Observations

A portrait of late Qing society through the eyes of Chen Hengqing, a jinshi degree holder from the Guangxu era and an imperial censor overseeing the capital.

A glimpse into old Chinese miscellanies: This book covers a remarkably broad range of subjects, including major events in China during the final years of the Qing, such as the Nian Rebellion moving north, the Boxer movement's opposition to foreigners, the Eight-Nation Alliance's invasion of the capital, the Xinhai Revolution, the Northeast Army of the Chinese Revolutionary Army occupying Weixian County, and Zhang Xun's restoration attempt. Some passages reveal the Qing court's incompetence and official corruption by describing the private lives of princes, ministers, bureau officials, and clerks. Others recount the economy, landscapes, customs, and notable local stories of the author's home province of Shandong, particularly Weixian, praising officials, local worthies, accomplished teachers, and great scholars who were upright, principled, devoted to their duties, and selfless. There are also accounts of the so-called "lower nine ranks" of people in the capital. The book further reflects the author's thoughts in his later years: after the transformative experience of the Xinhai Revolution, he supported harmony among the five ethnic groups, equality between men and women, women's emancipation, and the establishment of education for the common people.

It provides valuable historical and cultural materials for later generations seeking to understand and study late Qing society and local culture.
