In 2035, Mount Fuji in Japan had been dormant for more than 300 years. But it was not dead. It was merely gathering strength, waiting for the day to come.

That day, it would unleash all its fury and destroy everything.

The Japanese government had known the secret of Mount Fuji’s eruption since the start of the century. Using satellite surveillance, seismic monitoring, and measurements of the crater, among other methods, they discovered that the magma inside the mountain was swelling rapidly, that the number of vents had nearly reached 300, and that the internal pressure had climbed to an astonishing 1.6 megapascals.

Some scientists predicted that Mount Fuji would erupt within the next ten years, reaching an astonishing VEI-6 or higher.

An eruption of this scale would have devastating consequences for Japan. Volcanic ash would blanket the entire Japanese archipelago and drift as far as other Asian countries. Lava, ash, and other materials would destroy nearby cities and villages, while ash would contaminate water supplies and the air, killing countless living things.
