Farming and fleeing famine + space + incense-making + the blessings of taking it easy + a domineering husband + seaside foraging. Wen Zhiyu only wants to faithfully fulfill the wishes of the two people who helped her, then find a chance to “die” and go back.
But in this famine year, everything is dusty yellow: no water, no grain, no meat... She has no choice but to flee famine, witnessing all the cruelty of the world and every kind of disaster along the way.
First: taking the wrong road. Nothing is worse than taking a wrong turn while fleeing south, dying of thirst and barely able to walk, thinking you've finally found the right way, only to realize you've gone wrong after all. It makes you want to break down, doesn't it?
Second: selling children. Along the road, people sell their daughters for money to buy food. She has no choice but to protect herself, because someone close to her tried to sell her, and she nearly didn't make it.
Third: disasters. Fleeing south means sandstorms, locust plagues, disease, and food shortages...
Fourth: human calamity. In chaotic times, you can't afford to test people's hearts. Arm yourself to stay safe. You don't have to attack, but you need to be capable of it.
Break
Wen Zhiyu never imagined that as she lay flat and fled famine, she'd eventually have no choice but to get back on her feet.
No water or food? She has both. She stocked up on enough supplies in her space ahead of time.
Someone tries to sell her? She has a powerful patron: the buyer everyone on the refugee road fears, known by the respectable title of “broker.”
Disasters? Is she afraid? Of course! One sandstorm left her ears ringing and nearly blew her right up into the sky. And then...
People's hearts? You can never be too careful. The world is a cruel place.
The whole village of Xiashan is full of bickering and scheming, yet everyone pulls together to fight their enemies. Wherever she goes, there's pork to eat, incense to burn, and wild mushrooms to pick. They head south all the way, finally settling by the sea.
This is only the beginning.
