"Les Misérables (Set Volume 1 and 2)/World Literature Masterpiece" tells the story of Jean Valjean who was imprisoned for stealing a piece of bread due to hunger. After he was released from prison, he stole the bishop's silverware. Influenced by the bishop, he became a good man, changed his name to Madeleine, set up industry, and helped the poor. He was later elected mayor, but was recognized by the new police chief Javert. In order to save an innocent person who was mistaken for Jean Valjean, he voluntarily surrendered and returned again. After being released from prison, he adopted Cosette, the daughter of the dead female worker Fantine. When Cosette grew up, she fell in love with the aristocratic young man Marius. Marius went to Paris to participate in the uprising. In order to help the two of them, Jean Valjean went to the battlefield to find Marius, but happened to encounter the rebel army who was about to execute the captured Javert. Jean Valjean repays evil with kindness and lets Javert go. Javert was inspired and committed suicide by drowning. After the uprising failed, Jean Valjean took the risk to rescue the injured Marius and died after consummating his marriage to Cosette.
