I was sleeping just fine when, halfway through the night, Black and White Impermanence dragged me to the Underworld and tried to force me to drink Granny Meng’s Soup.
Of course I refused. I knocked over bowl after bowl of the soup, so Black and White Impermanence brought out their signature weapons, mourning staffs, and prepared to teach me a lesson.
Seeing how firmly I refused to drink, Granny Meng came over to reason with me. “Young man, everyone dies eventually. Whether it’s sooner or later, we all die.”
Crying, I said, “Ma’am, I’m young and healthy. How could I die in my sleep? I get up early and go to bed early, and I’m so careful when I go out that I won’t even step on an ant. How could I die before my time?”
Seeing me cry with snot all over my face, Granny Meng stopped Black and White Impermanence and checked the Three Lives Stone. She discovered that I still had plenty of years left, enough to live to at least ninety-nine.
Black and White Impermanence checked their work log and finally realized they’d taken the wrong person.
They were about to send me back, but to their surprise, I refused to go. I insisted on drinking Granny Meng’s Soup and being reincarnated.
Once I’d drunk it, the Book of Life and Death was thrown into chaos. To make up for their mistake, Black and White Impermanence agreed to all sorts of unfair terms. Only then did I return home, satisfied.
Now, watch me catch ghosts in the mortal world: beautiful female ghosts, bloodthirsty zombies, thousand-year-old vampires. If it’s a ghost, heh, sorry, it’s under my jurisdiction.
I never expected that catching ghosts in the mortal world would make me the mortal world’s acting Ksitigarbha as well.
And I’d even uncover a great secret buried for a thousand years!
