I’m a crematorium worker. On my first day at the funeral home, I came across a strange document titled The Crematorium Worker’s Handbook:
1. There are no ghosts in this world. Any unusual sounds you hear while cremating a body are hallucinations. Never speak to them. A qualified crematorium worker must not spread ghost stories or false rumors. Violators will be fired immediately.
2. If a small hill suddenly appears around the crematorium, pretend you don’t see it. Do not tell anyone about it. Remember, anyone who sees the hill must not go to North Mountain. If a visitor says they saw the hill, make them leave immediately. Do not let them wander around.
3. When alone in a room with a body, never talk to yourself, no matter what happens. You will be responsible for the consequences.
4. Do not bring mirrors into the area around the crematorium, especially inside the cremation room, and do not look into one.
5. Do not open coffins in the cremation room. If you hear scratching from inside a coffin or someone calling for help, ignore it.
6. When cremating an unclaimed body or someone who died a horrible death, it’s best to recite an incantation. It goes: “Om... @%& (worn away by time, illegible)... Dali... *? (crossed out)...”
7. After midnight, never turn off the lights in the cremation room. Light three candles in the northeast corner of the building.
8. Employees with unusual physical traits, such as six fingers, deformities, or crossed eyes, must not become crematorium workers. You will be responsible for the consequences.
9. Cremating bodies diminishes one’s karmic merit. Reciting an incantation can turn this loss into immeasurable virtue. The incantation is as follows: (the text has been torn away).
