Synopsis

The emperor deeply loves his second empress, Xie Mingxin. Even though she has borne him a son and a daughter and holds the position of empress, her seat is far from secure.

The emperor still keeps a place in his heart for his childhood sweetheart, his first wife, the former empress who died in childbirth.

Rong, the eldest legitimate daughter of the Defender-General, is arrogant and domineering. Though she is a high-ranking Consort, she was raised by the empress dowager from childhood. The Defender-General rendered great service in helping the emperor seize the throne, so both the emperor and empress dowager indulge Rong.

The Chancellor’s daughter, Zhong, is devastatingly beautiful. Even women are captivated by her looks, though fortunately Zhong has a timid disposition.

With so many concubines in the palace, each backed by powerful connections, how can the empress secure the emperor’s favor?
