A military text from the late Warring States period, its ideas are close to Legalism. It opposes the Confucian and Mencian principle of benevolence and advocates governing the state and the military through strict laws. It places great importance on establishing a legal system in the army and was also the first to propose a view of warfare based on economics. Its influence on later generations was profound.
