During summer vacation, nineteen-year-old Yang Zhifeng returned from Jing University to her hometown, delighted to spend the summer there. Just after entering the village, she came upon a funeral procession approaching from the other direction, with music blaring. As she drew closer, she saw her father’s name, Yang Zaisheng, written unmistakably on the wreath’s condolence banner. How could this be? Just two days ago, before she boarded the train, she had spoken with her father on the phone. He said everything at home was fine and told her to focus on her studies.
Her father was gone. Arriving in time for the funeral, Yang Zhifeng felt as if the sky had collapsed. A distant cousin offered to help her finish her studies.
After the funeral, Zhifeng set off with her cousin for the big city. Little did she know that this was the beginning of her long flight from danger!
