In reality, though, he has a small, unusual ability.
He can smell the presence of people with superpowers. Thanks to this ability, or perhaps because of it, he discovers that Bai Ze, one of the most beautiful girls at school, has the power of telepathy.
Only Ma Xiaozhou knows about Bai Ze's telepathy. Because of that, she starts sending him telepathic messages from time to time.

At school, Bai Ze comes across as quiet and mysterious. In reality, she's an extreme social recluse who is utterly hopeless at refusing invitations from other people.
So Shan Xiaozhou becomes her excuse for turning down the people around her.
