May You Be Safe, Wherever You Go

A historical novel, no romance, no female lead. They were chosen by history to become the keepers of “time.” They must forcibly twist the ancient, cyclical, slow “time of dynasties” into the linear, urgent “modern time” that presses ever forward. Every five-year plan is an attempt to “reset the clock” on the fate of the nation. At the bottom of Wang Renlin's camphorwood chest lie three things: a yellowed imperial examination paper, a commemorative medal from the Wuchang Uprising, and a letter from Yan'an that was never opened. That is the story of their lives. “If I make it out alive, wait for me at the old place. If I don't come back… tell my mother her son didn't let her down!” “This mission is yours and yours alone. …You must dig out this ‘shadow’!” “Comrades! This is the first battle since our independent detachment was formed! We can only win, not lose! We have to show those White Army bastards that the Northern Fujian Red Army is not to be trifled with! And we have to show the people in our base area that we can protect them!” “Tell my parents… my brother and I… didn't let them down…” “Te… tell my parents… their son… didn't bring shame… on the Chinese people…” “That one-legged instructor surnamed Wang… top-priority elimination target.” “They'll win. They definitely will.” “Bamboo is hollow, a symbol of modesty; its distinct joints symbolize integrity.” “We all love this land and the good people who live on it, and we will never waver, even unto death.” “The enemy can destroy a stronghold and kill a few people, but as long as this seed remains in the people's hearts, it cannot be extinguished.”
