This book is one of the masterpieces of Spanish realist literature in the nineteenth century. The work is set in the ancient city of Betusta. Through the love tragedy of the protagonist Anna, the work reveals the dissoluteness of the aristocratic class and the hypocrisy and greed of the clergy. It points out that the intrigues and lustful society are the main culprits of Anna's tragedy.
