Humans have always looked up at the stars and wondered why we are here and whether we are alone in this universe. We ask why the world is filled with flora and fauna, and what are the chances that this did not happen? Where do we come from, who are our ancestors, and what will be our destiny?
The answer to the question of life, the universe and everything is mysterious and short: mitochondria.
Because it tells us how molecules gave rise to life on our planet and why bacteria have dominated it for so long.
It tells us how the first truly complex cells were formed, and why life on Earth has since climbed up the slope of complexity to the flourishing landscape that surrounds us today.
It shows us why energy-burning, warm-blooded creatures emerged to break through the shackles of their environment; why we have sex, have two genders, have children, and why we must fall in love.
It also shows us why our days under this sky are limited and why we must eventually grow old and die. They also show us what we can do to improve our later years and avoid the curse of being human - the pain of aging.
Even if it doesn't tell us the meaning of life, it can at least help us understand why life is the way it is.
If none of this makes sense, then what else in the world does it make sense?

Understanding why this is so doesn't completely eliminate the feeling of emptiness it brings, but the process of finding the answers itself can bring solace.
Just like Dong Po's poem: "Everywhere in life, we know what is the same. It should be like a flying bird stepping on the snow mud. Occasionally, there are fingers and claws left on the mud, and the flying bird is counting things." Translating this book makes the longing time in life leave its mark. I hope that all readers have the mitochondria of a bird as big as a flying dragon. It is beneficial to open the book and the world is boundless!
The author's way of explanation is also very easy to understand, making it easy for a recent graduate like me to read. Especially the part about mitochondria gave me a deeper understanding of the origin and development of life. All in all, this is a great book worth reading!
