The ghosts you fear are all debts left unpaid in this world, and Bai Wei's job is to collect dreams from the dead.
On her eighteenth birthday, Bai Wei was kicked out by her own mother with nothing but a bank card and the words, "Don't come back too often." There were only four digits in the account, so she could only afford the cheapest rental in the city's urban village. She resolved to be a poor but respectable college student.
At three in the morning, the door lock turned by itself.
She saw no one, only a line of wet footprints on the floor. By the age of eighteen, she'd mastered just two things: being poor without shame, and running faster than ghosts.
"Congratulations, Host. You have been selected. Mission: Enter the nightmare world and capture and purify nightmare beasts."
Bai Wei: "Can I refuse?"
System: "No."
Bai Wei: "Then can I latch onto someone powerful?"
The System was silent for three seconds. "The Host is advised to prioritize improving her own abilities."
Bai Wei ignored it. She latched onto the most powerful person in the whole neighborhood: Qin Chengze of the Wanjian Qin family.
He was strong, he loved to cook, and he wore a pink teddy-bear apron. He looked at her as if she were a treasure he had to protect.
Only Qin Chengze knew that the little girl who called him "Godfather" every day was the fiancée he'd chosen when he was eight.
Bai Wei thought that as long as she clung to him, she could coast through life forever. But when human flesh was served at the Raven Inn's dinner table, and an old man's sigh came from the burial kiln in the nobles' hunting grounds, she realized that every nightmare was a debt left unpaid in this world.
And what she was best at was taking needle and thread to pull apart nightmares that had been sewn shut.
